What is a Degausser? How Do Degaussers Work?

Degaussing – a form of demagnetizing – is the process wherein a magnetic object, such as a computer tape, hard disk drive, or CRT monitor, is exposed to a magnetic field of greater, fluctuating intensity. A degausser is the machine that produces this intense magnetic field.

What We Do

Degaussing is a separate process from the computer system. It is a process that utilizes a machine (degausser) to produce a strong electromagnetic field that destroys magnetically recorded data on a magnetic media. (E.g. hard disk and tape media...) Why do we use it?

Why Degauss Your Media?

picture

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

In spite of all the material written about degaussing, most of it is in a format not easily understood by an average person. Let's try to answer some of the questions that cause about 90% of the confusion. But first, a glossary of terms and a couple of "Rules of Thumb".

Now you can have a peace of mind with our secure degaussing service

  • We provide both offsite and onsite services.
  • Professional technician to perform your requested job.
  • Guarantee 100% data sanitized, using CISA, NSA certified deguasser.
  • Rebounding Erasure method, complied to US, DoD most recommended degaussing standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why the need to ensure that electronic data in storage media are securely erased and destroyed?
A: By simply discarding obsolete or damaged storage media, traces of sensitive information are being left behind and can be recovered easily. This compromises the security of the confidential data.

Q: Why isnt smashing or drilling holes on storage media a secured means of destruction?
A: Data can still be recovered by a process known as MFM (Magnetic Force Microscopy)

Q: How then to ensure that data are erased securely?
A: Degaussing – Using secure data destruction equipment to permanently eliminate data from magnetic media. Shredding – Using secure data destruction equipment to completely pulverize and reduce the media to dust. Disintegration – Using secure data destruction equipment to destroy bulk materials into particles that cannot be reconstructed.

Q: What needs to be sanitised?
A:
• CDs and DVDs
• Hard Drives
• All forms of Magnetic Media
• Optical and Flash Drives
